Longwear Drugstore Foundation Faceoff

Can anyone else relate to the feeling of anxiety and dread when considering buying a new makeup product? What if I don’t like it? What if it’s the wrong shade? So many things can go wrong and you’ve wasted a bunch of money! Which is why I decided to put on a Foundation Face off and save you the trouble! I’ve tested out a new foundation for you and compared it to another long wear foundation I’ve used for years, so that you have a little better idea of what you’re getting into! I’ve been wanting to share this post with you for a while, but I wanted to wear the new foundation for a while to be able to give a clearer review. Just a reminder, what works for my skin may not work for yours, but I hope this helps!
To give you background on my skin- I have occasional acne (usually hormone related… I break out on my period), large pores, and i get oily in my t-zone area especially. I like a heavier foundation, so I look for medium to full build-able coverage that is longwear (A typical day for me is going from the gym to chasing toddlers all day and there is no time for touch ups!)

Meet the two contenders:
The website claims it’s an “All-in-one foundation with a long-lasting formula that fuses primer, concealer, and foundation in one easy step! The 3-in-1 formula provides a flawless look that lasts all day long.” I’ve used this foundation for a long time, and I definitely love it!
This is a new product (it might be a remake of something they had available years ago, if I understand correctly). Website description: “Maybelline Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation delivers 24-hour wear for concentrated coverage and a flawless finish that doesn’t fade or shift all day.”
On to my review:
Color matching
I tend to have a particularly hard time finding a good color match for foundation in the winter months. Something about the harsh glare off of the pretty white snow on a sunny day has a way of exposing the dreaded makeup foundation line, no matter how good the lighting was when applying. I’m tempted to apply my makeup outside in my car some days! It doesn’t help that my self tanning regimen changes the color of my skin tone so often. I always have a couple different shades of foundation on hand and mix them as the week goes by (I self tan once a week, and it gradually fades, especially by day days 4-6 or so). All that to say, I was super nervous to pick out a new shade at the grocery store, but I think I miraculously succeeded!
I like the color I picked in the Maybelline foundation more than my usual Covergirl color. Sometimes I feel like the Covergirl one has too much of a pink undertone whereas this one has a little more of a yellowish undertone, which seems to blend better with my skin tone. Maybelline has 16 shades available and Covergirl has only 13. However, because the Maybelline product is new, it’s availability in store seems to be super limited. I picked up two shades of the Maybelline and mixed them after I self tanned. It seemed to work well.
Price/availability
Prices are pretty much identical at around $10. Like I mentioned earlier though, I had been looking for the Maybelline foundation for over a month before finding it at my local grocery store, and the stock was really limited. I had even tried to order it online from Target but they canceled my order. You might have a hard time finding this product for a while until it becomes more popular.
Wear
As I’ve said in other makeup reviews, the Covergirl foundation tends to wear just a bit around my chin and nose after a long day of working out/nannying. I’ve noticed the same trend with the Maybelline Foundation. The only other thing I’ve noticed is that I had a bit more “shine” sometimes at the end of the day with the Maybelline. Not enough to make me super concerned at this point, but the Covergirl might be a better option if you’re looking for a really matte finish all day long. I’m curious to see how the Maybelline holds up in the Michigan humidity this summer.
Coverage
I used the same preparation routine for trying out the Maybelline foundation. First, some face lotion (right now I use a prescription lotion for acne during pregnancy), then primer, foundation, concealer and stick contour, set/bake. Then I add my powder contour, blush, and highlighter. Again, I’ve got a full rundown of those products in this post and this contouring post. I feel like I used a little bit more (maybe like a half pump extra) of the Maybelline foundation than I do with the Covergirl to give me the same degree of coverage. It’s a slightly more runny foundation, which doesn’t surprise me because the Covergirl claims to be a 3 in 1, primer+foundation. It’s quite thick, which I like because I feel like I use less product to get full coverage that way.
My Conclusion:
Can I just admit that I really like both products? I might end up keeping both on hand and using them more seasonally- Maybelline in the winter for the great color matching for my skin and Covergirl in the summer for that perfect matte finish.
