Unique Ideas to throw an Unforgettable Baby Shower

At the risk of sounding super cynical, I’m just going to throw it out there:
Showers can be a little cringe worthy.
I’m not trying to belittle all the hard work that goes into throwing them. It’s a wonderful way to bless a loved one and celebrate her future (whether it’s a bridal shower or baby shower), but really… When you pull out another invite from the mailbox does your mind automatically go to- several hours of your precious weekend gone, navigating the registry lists, the small talk with her Great Aunt Edna, the punch and cookies, the same old “shower games”…? And yet, you’ll smile and bear it because you know how much it means to her.
So especially if you’re the one hosting a shower,
how do you make it less of a sacrifice of time for those attending and more of an outpouring of enjoyment for everyone?
I am here to testify that this is possible. Truly, it is. The ladies who put together my baby showers really stepped it up with their creativity and thoughtfulness! They were some of the most lovely showers I’ve attended.

Based off of these showers, I put together a few unconventional ways to make a shower memorable, enjoyable, and unique, without having to break the bank!
Consider your loved one and guests:
Who are you throwing the shower for- is she more outgoing? Does she like bigger groups? Or is being in the center of attention hard for her?
I had four different showers, which sounds like a lot (it was) but they all had smaller guest lists (many of them around 10 people), which I absolutely loved. The intimate size made me feel comfortable enough to really enjoy myself with the ladies, rather than feeling like I only had time say a quick hello before needing to move on to the next guest in order to connect with everyone in a larger group.
Make it a double! One of my showers was a joint shower with another mom to be- it was SO fun to celebrate with someone else and I loved not having the pressure of all the attention on me. Just make sure you check with both ladies first to make sure that this is something they want!
Is there a theme that you can tie in based off of the interests of the group? Another one of my showers was a music theme, (since I am musical) and consequently many of my friends are as well. They incorporated the theme in the decor and games and it was so tastefully done and fun.

Activities:

How about cutting the games completely and pamper that mama (or bride to be)…. One of the sweetest gestures from the ladies at an amazing surprise shower was when the gave me an at home spa foot treatment! We just relaxed and watched a chick flick together. This was a co-ed couple shower as well. After cake and time hanging out all together, the guys whisked my husband off to play laser tag (I wish I could have seen these all these grown men running around the laser tag place haha), while the ladies pampered me!
Instead of a game, do a craft!! My mom put together at headband making station. It was simple enough for the “non crafters” of the bunch to enjoy, and it blessed me with an abundance of cute headbands for darling baby girl. She even included little tags to keep track of the headband size and write who made it. She used this tutorial, including the cute free printables!

Got a lively group? Play a game! I’m not trying to sound anti-shower games. They can be really fun with the right group, especially if it’s one you haven’t repeatedly done at the last 7 showers you attended. One game we played involved throwing a beach ball around and doing “truth or dares” related to babies/parenting. Find the game here. This group loved to laugh and is rather lively, so it was the perfect activity in that context.
Food:

loved this yummy homemade cake and all the soft pretty details of this tablescape at my surprise shower!
Food can be a really expensive part of the shower, especially if you cater or have it at a restaurant. Several of my shower hosts opted to do something home cooked- lunch, brunch, and dessert. Not only was it delicious, it also made for a more homey feel! It doesn’t have to be fancy or gourmet either. With a little extra effort, it helps cut costs, and your guests will really appreciate the added touch of homemade food.
Cute idea: The shower that served brunch had a “Mom-mosa” bar. I wish I had taken a picture! It was such a cute idea to amp up the beverage game. Put out some different juices, frozen fruits, champagne (and a non alcoholic option for mom to be), and your guests will LOVE you.
Bring some depth with wisdom and advice:
This is where your shower will make a true and lasting impact. If your loved one is anything like me, as wonderful and exciting the future plans are, it’s also a little terrifying.

Shower her with prayer. At my bridal shower a couple years ago, the guests gathered around me and prayed over me. I’ll never forget it.
Have someone give a devotional- my lovely Grandmother shared the Word with us, and it was such a special time. To hear her wisdom and sharing Scripture was probably the most impactful time out of all of my showers.
Give advice and make it interactive with the guests! My friend gifted me with an adorable “blessings jar” and had the guests write out a blessing, a note of encouragement, advice, etc on little heart shaped pieces of paper. She explained that during the long nights, the baby blues, or whenever I need a little heart boost, Ryan and I can pull out a “blessing” to read.
Do you have any great ideas or memories from different showers you attended? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

In this photo you can tell it was my first shower by that little baby bump! It’s much bigger now, but I still wear this outfit! This is one of the looks from my last post: “How to Style Your Pregnancy Without Breaking the Bank”
