Cheap & Easy Seasonal Decor Hack

I’m always looking for ways to refresh the seasonal decor from year to year. It’s nice to have your staple pieces, but something new to make it seem fresh and updated does wonders. The problem is, getting something new every season/year is not always in the budget.

Take a moment next time you’re in Target and browse the seasonal pillows. You’re looking at spending at least $20-30 and upward for just one pillow. Loads of pillows makes a space look warm and cozy and inviting, and they can perfectly bring in the festivity of the season. But at that price point, it can get expensive.

However, with a few basic hand sewing skills, you can update your decor with an abundance of adorable seasonal pillows.

You’re wondering, how? The secret is place mats!! Yes, you heard me. All of those adorable seasonal place mats can be transformed into adorable little pillows. Keep reading for details on how to make them! It’s SO easy and fast.

First off, you’re looking for a double sided fabric place mat. You need to make sure that there are two sides to the place mat that have been sewn together. Otherwise, this won’t work. I LOVE target’s selection of place mats and they run about $4-5/mat. If you’re smart, wait until the season is almost over and get them on clearance for $2 or less! I’ve also found some cute ones at Home Goods and TJ Maxx.

The leaf ones shown above are from TJ Maxx. I got them in a four pack for around $12.

Supplies:

  1. place mat

  2. poly-fil stuffing

  3. basic sewing supplies: seam ripper, needle and thread, scissors, and pins

After you’ve gathered you’re supplies, put on your favorite seasonal movie and get to work!

Rip out part of the seam on the place mat.

I start near one of the bottom corners and go maybe rip out maybe 4-5 inches of the seam. You’ll need it just big enough to be able fit your hand in as you stuff it with the poly fil.

Fill with poly-fill

Make sure you fluff each handful of the poly-fill as you stuff your pillow. If you skip this step, you’ll end up using a lot more poly-fill and have lumpy pillows. No thanks! I start by stuffing the corner and working in. Be careful not to overstuff, as you’ll wind up with creasing in the pillow.

Sew up the opening

Close the seams with a couple straight pins and sew it up by hand!

Hooray! You have a gorgeous pillow to spruce up the living room with a little seasonal love. I’ve already pulled out some Christmas ones in preparation for switching out my fall decor to my favorite time of year!

These also make great gifts, and extra bonus is that they have a “homemade” personal touch to them! Looking for some other gift ideas? Prints like these are my favorite for decorating around the house, and I switch them out based on seasons too!
