DIY Tile Stencil Painted Floors

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a DIY Home project.

We’ve painted nearly everything that can be painted in our house (check out our Kitchen remodel with painted cabinets, but with being pregnant again, I was sure that I’d still find some project to kickstart the “nesting” stage!

We’ve got a small little entry way space by our kitchen that gets a LOT of traffic, and unfortunately it has some terribly outdated linoleum floors. We didn’t want to go through the trouble/cost of new flooring in the space so naturally I went to Pinterest for some DIY ideas/inspiraration.

What did I find? DIY stencil tile painted floors!

Yes, you read correctly. I decided to paint my floors to mimic a beautiful patterned tile. Nearly all of the posts I read up on raved about Cutting Edge Stencils, so I decided to look into their products! I went with the Medium 8″X8″ Felicity stencil. I was so impressed with the quality of the stencils. You can pick the design (SO many great options) and size that will best fit your space.

I was most worried about what type of paint to use since it is such a high traffic area and I wanted it to last. There are a lot of different recommendations out there, but in the end I went with what Cutting edge recomended in their tutorial. I got a good primer, basic paint (some of which I already had on hand), and most importantly: a water based polyerathane, along with a few other supplies they recomended.

They recommend getting two stencils so that it’s easier and quicker to work with. I definitely agree! The trickiest part was the edges and corners but the high quality stencils made it possible to work with because they are thick yet bendable!

My #1 tip:

Take your time. Especially if you are stenciling floors (rather than a wall or furniture), let your paint cure in between layers and be patient with the stenciling process- if you go too fast it can get sloppy. But also don’t expect perfection- part of the charm to this project is that not every stenciled detail is going to look exactly the same.

And there you have it! I’m absolutely in love with my DIY painted stencil tile floors. I will give an update at a later date on how they hold up!
