Front Door Face Lift

Why not celebrate my Birthday week with a little DIY project? A pink door=a very happy birthday to me!

My trips to Europe over the last several years have given me a love for bright colored doors. They are so adorably charming! I think there is a bit of history with this- I remember someone in Dublin telling us that women would paint their doors a bright color so that their drunk husbands would know which house to come home to at night coming home from the pub. I have no idea if that’s actually true, though! I’ve also heard that in an effort to quietly (or not so quietly) protest the strict architectural guidelines for homes being built (and were all identical), homeowners painted their doors in bright colors.

There’s just something about a bold front door that puts a smile on your face.

I decided a while ago it was time to give a face lift to our darling little home. A change to the front door color completely changes the look of a home- all for the cost of a few trips to Starbucks.

To be honest, with the first coat I was freaking out. Major color regret… It was just so very different to what we were used to (a rather safe dark purple color) and this was–

so. very. pink.

But now, after a couple days, it’s really grown on me!

My husband helped me make the final decision for color. Anyone else get overwhelmed with how many options there are?

In the end we went with Valspar Delicate Pink Rose. I used Valspar Duramax Exterior paint in semi-gloss (1 quart was plenty) and for Primer, Zinsser Bulls Eye primer that we had on hand already.

The process was pretty straightforward:

wash door
lightly sand and wipe down again
tape off or remove hardware
apply primer coat and lightly sand after it dries
apply color coat and lightly sand after it dries (I did three coats of the color)

I used a basic paint brush and and a 4 in paint roller.
